About – Design, Function and Findability

I was working at Edelbrock Corp at the time when Netscape introduced the first web browser (mid 90s) and have followed the discussion related to page design and functionality over the years. I have heard it said that the most ugly of web pages are listed at the top of Google keyword searches mostly because these sites are text heavy. So how do you achieve a balance in design, functionality and relevance? Because there really isn’t any point in having a beautifully designed site that doesn’t function as expected or can not be found. When first mapping out a website’s design, it is best to consider function and relevance within that design.

Of course, there are instances where there really isn’t any reason (as in this site) or meaning in the design. It just needs to convey some kind of aesthetics. You may be wondering “what’s the purpose of the palm tree?” It is just there as a graphic element just as you would plant a tree in your front yard for curb appeal. So the purpose in this design is to find a look that is pleasing and balanced. Oh, so… there is a purpose in this design!
